Poha has always been a saviour whenever I wake up late in the morning ! There are many many variations and recipes you can make using poha. Kanda Batata poha is one of the easiest and quick Maharashtrian breakfast recipe. Authentic recipe calls in for roasted groundnuts(moongphali) but as Sunil doesn’t prefer using it I haven’t used it here in this recipe.
Kanda batata poha is made using Beaten rice, potatoes and onions. You can also send it across as a lunch box meal. Poha with a cup of hot coffee or tea is an outstanding combination. Not just for breakfast, you can eat poha as a snack with your evening cupof coffee/Tea.
I have used boiled potatoes here. I do not prefer using raw potatoes and cooking it in the pan because it makes the onions overcook and it totally looses its crunch. So I suggest you to use boiled and chopped potatoes for a better flavour.
Ingredients:
Poha/Beaten rice – 1 cup(washed thoroughly and soaked in very little water)
Onion – 1 medium (finely chopped)
Potato – 1 medium ( boiled, peeled and chopped)
Cumin seeds/ Jeera – 1 tsp
Curry leaves – 1 sprig
Green chillies – 3 (slit)
Coriander leaves – 2 tbsp (finely chopped)
Lemon juice – 1 tsp
Oil – 2 tbsp
Salt to taste
Method:
- In a pan, add oil and allow it to heat.
- Add jeera/cumin seeds, slit green chillies and curry leaves.
- Add chopped onion and saute on high heat for awhile.
- Add turmeric and continue sauteing.
- Add boiled and chopped potato and fry further till potatoes are coated well with chopped onions. Add salt and mix.
- Add soaked poha and mix till everything is combined well. Check for salt.
- Add lemon juice and chopped coriander leaves.Mix everything till incorporated.
- Close the pan with a lid and turn the gas flame to low for 5 minutes.
- Turn off the gas once done.
Tips:
- If you like using toasted peanuts, toast a handful of peanuts before you proceed step 1 and set aside. Add after step 9 while your serving 🙂
- You also can add 1/2 tsp sugar in step 7 for a variation.
One of my most fav breakfast options at home. Simple, easy & delish.
